Wolf represents freedom, loyalty, trust, intuition, protection and family.
Wolves have been unjustly villainized, maligned and misunderstood for centuries due to ignorance, superstition and the "god complex" of humans. They are portrayed as blood thirsty killers and dangerous. However that is further from the truth. An attack by a wolf is extremely rare, and when there has been an attack the wolf has been habituated by humans, rabid, starved or a cross breed. In most cases they do not like humans and will run away unless threatened. Wolves like any wild animal can be unpredictable. That's why when in wolf territory one should use common sense, be vigilant and have a healthy respect for them.
Wolves are highly intelligent and sociable animals. They are loyal to their pack and have a hierarchy. At the top is the alpha male and the alpha female who mate for life. They communicate with each other through body language and eye contact. Every move has a meaning and fights are rare. Cooperation is essential to their survival and every wolf knows its place within its "family". They have faith and trust in each other and know they can depend on one another during challenging situations. They protect and help each other.
Wolves keep the ecosystem in balance by hunting and culling out the young, old, weak and the ill so that only the hardiest of an animal species remain. This keeps sickness from spreading among herds and to help prevent over population.
Wolf as a totem or spirit guide can help you to learn how to trust in your own intuition and to follow your "gut" when making important life changes or decisions. Free yourself from all that no longer serves you. Negative thoughts, behaviours and relationships only weaken you. Strengthen relations within family and friends by improving communication, and having respect for yourself and others. Everyone has their own strengths and weaknesses and every person contributes in their own way to the "pack", whether this is family, friends or a work situation. Wolf guides us to be the best of ourselves and that individuality is a strength not a weakness.
There is an amazing video that was written and narrated by British journalist, author and environmental activist George Monbiot; "How Wolves change rivers". It demonstrates the importance of wolves to the ecosystem and in essence how all animals contribute to it in their own ways. If one organism is eliminated then everything becomes unbalanced. In 1926 the last wolf pack in Yellow Stone National Park was eliminated which over the course of seventy years caused an unfortunate domino effect to the ecosystem.

There is also another similar short video where Sir David Attenborough and grey wolf scientist Kira Cassidy explain the consequences of what happens to the ecosystem when animals are eliminated using the same example of Yellow Stone National Park.
